Gaza visit

Feb 24, 2016

The Grand Hospitaller of the Sovereign Order of Malta H.E. Prince Dominique de La Rochefoucauld-Montbel, the Representative Office of the Sovereign Order of Malta to the State of Palestine, and the CEO and a delegation from the St. John Eye Hospital in Jerusalem visited Gaza to assess humanitarian needs, especially after the war in 2014. The group was invited by the St. John Eye Hospital Group, which is building a new ophthalmological hospital in Gaza in response to increased need in the region.

The tour was facilitated by the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA), which took the group to one of 252 schools UNWRA operates in Gaza where they were given a briefing on the overall humanitarian situation by the Deputy Director of UNWRA Operations in Gaza Ms. Melinda Young. Next, the group visited one of UNWRAs’ hospitals where the Grand Hospitaller and the Head of the Representative Office met with the UNWRA Director of Health Ms. Ghada Al Jabda to discuss health needs in Gaza, and to assess the potential impact and feasibility of creating a project of the Order of Malta in Gaza.
